Kinesio Taping

What is Kinesio Taping

Kinesiology Taping, also known as Kinesio Taping or K-Taping, was created by Kenzo Kase; a chiropractor in Japan in the 1970's. It became more widely known and popular following the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where many athletes were spotted wearing brightly coloured tape for their events.

There is a growing body of evidence to support the use of Kinesio Tape for a variety of conditions, and it is most effective in conjunction with other treatment methods e.g. manual therapy and exercise.

The tape itself is similar to a plaster, or Band-Aid; stretchy and sticky. It is hypo-allergenic, so is tolerated well even by people with sensitive skin. Once applied, it can usually be worn for 3-5 days and is water resistant, meaning you can still swim and shower whilst wearing it.

Benefits of using Kinesio tape include:

  • Pain reduction

  • Reduction of swelling and oedema

  • Joint and postural support

  • Improved range of movement

  • Enhanced healing and recovery

In many instances, you can be taught how to apply the tape yourself, meaning you can reapply at home in between your therapy sessions for better continuity and improved outcomes.
